Forming Hinges On A Punch Press

In this video MatePrecision Tooling takes us through the operations required to form a hinge using a punch press. Manufacturing a hinge on a punch press can be completed using two forming tool sets in a three stage process. The first tool forms the leading edge and root of the hinge knuckle in a two stage process. The second tool essentially rolls the hinge knuckle to complete the forming process.

Using a tool set for this type of forming process on a CNC turret punch press eliminates the need for specialised tooling such as a progressive die set for a stamping tool. It also means that component design can be optimised to include the hinge knuckles on the part rather than riveting or spot welding a hinge to the part.
