Some time ago I got this cool multi color night-light from the hardware store on sale. It has an RGB LED with 6 single color modes and a slow fade mode that cycles through the colors. It can be used for light painting with and without the soft filter.
The biggest problem with the night-light is the way you switch it on and off and cycle between modes. The unit has a tilt switch which is not user-friendly when light painting.
1. Find the tilt switch in the circuit.
2. Remove the tilt switch by de-soldering it
3. Drill a hole in the night-light housing for the push button switch
4. Solder in lead wires for the push button switch to the circuit board
5. Connect the lead wires to the push button switch and solder (make sure the lead wires are passed through the switch mounting nut and housing hole before soldering)
6. Mount the push button switch into the lamp housing
7. Re-mount the filter and the job is done
I have also made it easier to remove the filter from this lamp as it makes a good ‘hard’ light source without it. My only regret with this lamp is not buying more of these when they were discontinued and on sale.
Here is an image a created using this night-light in the past. Now it is time to get out and create some more art with this updated light painting tool.
